What is a RoboCall?

How RoboCalls Work

So you know that RoboCalls are a proven, affordable, and effective way of reaching thousands of voters during a political campaign. But how exactly do they work?

A RoboCall is automated. When a landline is dialed using a RoboCall, a prerecorded message is played either to a live recipient or to an answering machine. After the automated call has dialed the phone number and the callee (person being called) answers the phone, they’ll hear the automated recording.

How RoboCalls Actually Work

Experian defines a robocall as “a recorded message that is transmitted automatically to many telephone numbers by an automatic dialing device.” Consumer Reports takes the definition a little further by including both landline phones and mobile phones, as well as allowing that a robocall can even send an unsolicited text to a cell phone.

The Federal Communications Commission is involved in this problem, and is working to reduce these illegal robocalls.

The Federal Trade Commission set up the National Do Not Call Registry to help people have more control over who/what can contact them.
